About Artist
About Jill McGannon
Jill Schultz McGannon completed her BFA and MFA at the University of Georgia in 1985 and 1988, and has worked as a full-time artist for 35 years. Her plein air and large-scale studio paintings can be seen at Reinert Fine Art in Charleston, SC, Four Corners Gallery in Bluffton, SC, High Country Art in Blue Ridge, GA, Mason Fine Art in Atlanta, GA and Addington Gallery in Chicago, IL. She paints in oils in a painterly realistic style, preferring to work from life whenever possible. She started painting plein air in Cortona, Italy in 1995 when she was Artist in Residence on the UGA Studies Abroad Program, and continued painting plein air in coastal SC and GA upon returning home. She has won first place at four plein air events in the last two years, and was accepted into five NOAPS (National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society) and four OPA (Oil Painters of America) shows since 2021. She has won three awards in the Plein Air magazine Salon in the last three years, and was featured in International Artist Magazine in January of 2023 in their Best Landscapes contest.
"Up before dawn, I’m standing on the edge of the marsh with the sun coming up, bathing the tops of the trees with a warm glow. There’s a cool cast shadow on the marsh grass, and it’s all reflected in the water. The quiet is broken only by an egret fishing nearby. I try to paint slow enough to get the drawing, values, and color right, but fast enough to finish the painting before the light changes. Every now and then my concentration is broken by a squirrel or heron. The light has changed now, but I’m finished. I leave with my painting and a sense of satisfaction. I’ve learned something new today, some subtle color or value change, or drawing correction that I didn’t notice the last time I painted plein air. I never tire of trying to capture the magical beauty of light."
